山形新幹線は、福島から山形・新庄へ向かうミニ新幹線方式の路線。
東北新幹線を走ってきたE3・E8系「つばさ」は、福島で「やまびこ」を切り離し、
標準軌化された在来線の奥羽本線に入る。
福島を出ると列車は山あいへ入り、急勾配とカーブが続く板谷峠を越える。
峠を下ると盆地が広がり、米沢、赤湯、上山を経て県都山形へ至る。
山形を過ぎると列車の本数は少なくなり、将棋で知られる天童、
名産品がそのまま駅名になったさくらんぼ東根を経て、新庄へ向かう。
1992年に開業し、ミニ新幹線方式の先駆けとなった路線でもある。
The Yamagata Shinkansen is a mini‑shinkansen line running from Fukushima to Yamagata and Shinjo.
The E3 and E8 series Tsubasa trains arrive on the Tohoku Shinkansen, uncouple from the Yamabiko at Fukushima,
and then enter the Ōu Main Line, which has been converted to standard gauge for this service.
After leaving Fukushima, the train heads into the mountains and climbs the steep, winding Itaya Pass.
Descending the pass, the landscape opens into a broad basin, passing through Yonezawa, Akayu, and Kaminoyama
before reaching the prefectural capital, Yamagata.
Beyond Yamagata the number of trains decreases, and the line continues through Tendo, known for shogi,
and Sakuranbo‑Higashine, named after the region’s famous cherries, before arriving at Shinjo.
Opened in 1992, it was the first line to adopt the mini‑shinkansen system.
